MR EDWARD MARSH WILLIAMS. TTkr. Press Association. I NAPIER, Oct. 11. The death occurred at Pukehou today, at the age of 91, of Mr Edward Marsh Williams, eldest son of the late Archdeacon Henry Williams. [Mr Edward Marsh Williams, exJudge of Native Land Court was born at Hampstead, London, 1818 and educated in England for the medical profession, but owing to ill-health relinquished his studies. He arrived at the Bay of Islands with his parents in the ship “Brampton” in 1823 and became a proficient Maori linguist. He translated into Maori the Treaty of Waitangi, of which Governor Hobson (1840) appointed Archdeacon Henry Williams to take charge. He received the appointment of Native Interpreter to Major Bunbury (Commissioner acting on behalf of Governor Hobson) to obtain signa; tures to the Treaty of Waitangi throughout the colony. Subsequently he was appointed Government Interpreter, Clerk of Court, and first postmaster at Auckland. In 1842 he retired and settled on a farm at Pakaraka. Was appointed resident 'magistrate for Bay of Islands and northern districts by Sir George Grey in 1861, retiring in 1880. He was appointed Judge- of Native Land Court in 1880, holding office until 1891 (retired).]
