A STEAMER’S PERIL.

SHORT OF COAL AND CLOSE TO

ROCKS

(Pun Punas Association. l WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. The British, cargo steamer Lodorer, hound from Buenos Ayres to Newcastle, put into Wellington on Saturday night for coal. She had only 15 tons left, barely enough for one day. River Plate was left on August 26, and two days out the ship ran into a gale. About 150 tons of water was pumped into the after hold to steady her, and later, as the sea became heavier, another 300 tons was taken in. This served to keep the propeller submerged, and gave a chance of steering just in the nick of time, as the vessel was then uncomfortably close to the Aguahstas jocks. The crew are all well.
