AN UNIDENTIFIED STEAMER
SEEN NEAR THE CIIATHAMS
rpicn Press Association.'! WELLINGTON, October 11. The tramp steamer Lodorer, which put into Wellington for coal on Saturday, passed an unidentified steamer last Thursday to the north-westward of the Ohathams. The chief officer states that the size of the vessel could not be distinguished in the dark, but she was steaming eastward. An unusually strong light occupied the position of the anchor light. After the steamer was abeam she burned a blue light and a few moments l after sent up a rocket. Tho Lodorer failed to understand the signal, which was takon to be a private one, and answered with a blue light to indicate that they had been observed. The Lodorer attached no special significance to the incident. The steamer Ripple is due from Lyttelton to-morrow or Wednesday. Her arrival is anxiously awaited for nows of the missing Duco. Tho Marine Department is of the opinion that the vessel seen by the steamer Lodorer on Thursday night, and which it has been suggested may have been the Duco, was probably the Amokura, which would he in that vicinity at that time.
