BOARD OF EDUCATION.
MEETING AT NAPIER. (Special to “Times.”) NAPIER, October 11. The ordinary meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held to-day. Present: The Chairman (Sir William Russell). Messrs Whittington, Erickson, Tanner, McLeod, Darton, and Morgan, ljeave of absence was granted to Mr. Hunter and the Rev. W. Grant on account of illness. The following Poverty Bay district matters were attended to: — An application from Puha for £4 for levelling was declined, as there are no funds available for the purpose. Tokomaru: Material and painting for roof to b© supplied. Makaraka: The Inspector was asked to report on the necessity for partition. Inspector Hill was asked to report on the question of a school at Waipaoa and at Kaiteratahi. Gisborne sanitary arrangements were deferred till the question of drainage of the town is settled. Patutahi was granted two outoffices. The Department intimated that the question of increased accommodation at Puha would be deferred until the amount of appropriation for the year for school buildings was known. The Board decided to write again to the Department impressing the urgent necessity for the increased accommodation.
The Department declined to grant a school at Milltown on the ground that when the High School is erected the Gisborne School will be able to accommodate 150 more children. It was decided that the Department be asked to re-consider the matter, on account of the distance children would have to travel. A grant was made to the school at Wairoa, alternate tenders to be called for ordinary fires and heating by hot water. The Commissioner agreed to exchange four acres near the Wairoa bridge for the old school site. Miss Adams, Gisborne, was granted three months’ sick leave. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Gatland. headmaster of the Gisborne High School, for assistance rendered Mr. Loten at the teachers’ class on Saturday. It was decided that the site for a school at Kanakanaia he taken by proclamation. '.Hie following motions, of which notice had been given, were carried:— By the Chairman—“ That the Board meet in future on tho last Thursday in the month, at 2 p.m..” “That a committee be appointed to report on the employment of technical instructors, the committee to consist of the Chairman, Messrs Whittington, Darton and Morgan, and the Rev. W. Grant.”
By Mr. Tanner—“ That teachers be directed to make provision for teaching temperance principles,. • showing the effects of strong drink in blunting the sensibilities and deteriorating character, and the effect of the drink habit on the productive capacities of the nation, with special reference to labor and capital.” The report of a committee was adopted 1 recommending that school committees must keep clean schools and outhouse windows, spouting and tanks, repair outhouse window blinds, spouting. doom, furniture and fences, keep grounds clean and in good order, and trees and hedges temped and trimmed. Idle cost of any of the above works that may be done by the foreman of works to be debited to school committees, and deducted from the capitation.”
