The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, October 9, states: —The mutton market is firm, with a hardening tendency on account of the small shipments expected. The low price is encouraging a good demand for all descriptions. The market has been favorably affected, by the advance in mutton. The average price to-day was: New Zealand hind-quar-ters 3|d, forequarters 2|d. The butter market is firm, and the demand moderate. Buyers are holding back, expecting prices to go lower when the colonial shipments arrive. The price of choicest New Zealand butter to-day was 118 s, for best quality only; Danish 117 s, Siberian 107 s, Australian 104 s. The cheese market is quiet, but steady. New Zealand is at 575. The hemp market remains firm; business is apparently improving. New Zealand good to fair, on spot, to-day is at £27 15s; fair grade, on spot, £27 15s; fair current Manila £26 los, forward shipment; October to December, New Zealand good to fair, per ton £27 10s; fair; grade £26 10s; fair current Manila £25 10s. The Manila output for the week was 27.000 bales. There is a better demand for cocksfoot seed. The market is firmer. A few inquiries are being made by speculative buyers for cocksfoot seed. The average price for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171bs per bushel, on. spot, is 67s 6d. The wheat market is weakening, with signs of a decline. Large shipments arriving from Russia and America affect the market. New Zealand longberried wheat, on spot, ex granary, per quarter of 496'lbs. is at 335; shortberried ditto, 375. The oats market is quiet, but steady. There is a fair demand for better grades.
