HOW THEY BEAT THE FAVORITE. The Taranaki scribe “Moturoa” thus refers to the totally unexpected defeat of Lady Medallist at Wanganui:—“After her Wanganui Guineas victory nothing would go down with punters but Lady Medallist for the Marangai Handicap. “No. 1” on the tote jumped its it never did before, and the now hoarse band of Bar Vons yelled “daylight robbery” odds “on” the good thing. Jenkins was up and it couldn’t lose—it was a moral! Those who hadn’t money borrowed it from those who had, arid everybody stretched their “credit” (if they had any) with the pencillers, and backed Lady Medallist. Jenkins drew tho rails (as usual), and the crowd went over to see him win. Some went round and took up positions at the “pay-oyt” window, and the race started. But. alas! Mildura and Bridge went off like a flash, Mendip. Expansion, and Guiding Step next, and the favorite last. Bridge “scaled” as he didn't in the Guineas, and it was only bv dint of hard riding that Lady Medallist drew within a couple of lengths of him at the four-furlong peg. Champion knight of the pigskin, R. Hatch, couldn’t make Bridge gallop in the Guineas, but F. Coleman shook him into his best gait this time “The favorite’s done,” went up the wail as Bridge, still hard-ridden, increased liis advantage. Mendip ranged alongside Lady Medallist, and Jenkins drew the flail. Gamely the little daughter of St. Alwyne stuck to mt task, hut still the leader kept on leading with annoying persistency, and, ridden right out, hurried homo a winner by over two lengths from Mendip, who capped all by leaving the favorite in the run home. It was a sad crowd that turned for home and hard work once more. T have seen brighter faces sit funerals.”
