GOLF.

LONGEST DRIVE ON RECORD. In the course of playing in the tour-'-n a merit at North Berwick, England, recently, W. H. Horne, of Chertsey, drove the ball from the thirteenth tee p, the edge of the thirteenth green. The distance from the teeing ground '

to the hole is 476 yards, and the length of Horne’s drive was 469 yards, while Rowland Jones and C. H. Mayo are said to have laid their tee shots only 15 or 20 yards short of Horne’s. This extraordinary drive constitutes a record in driving. Although it is difficult to get an accurate measurement of the great drives which are known to have been made, if is recognised that the record drive hitherto was that of Mr. Edward Blackwell in 1592, when bo struck the steps of the home hole, the distance being 306 yards. The late Lieutenant Tait, in 1893, at- St. Andrews, drove 341 yards 9 inches. The record drive bv a lady was made by Miss AA'higham, of Prestwick, in the Ladies’ Championship at AVestward Ho in 1890, when at the seventeenth bole she drove 234 yards. Horne about tiro years ago made a very big drive, but the distance was not properly marked. At the thirteenth hole at North Berwick the ground dips, and Horne had the advantage of a strong following wind as well as of very dry ground.
