LABOR DAY CELEBRATION.

TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME. Gisborne will be on fete to-day on the • occasion of the annua] Labor Day holi--1 day. There will be a procession end sports in the daytime and-various entertainments at night, while away from Gisborne, the Muriwai races are sure to attract a large number of visitors. S The demonstration by the various I trades and trades unions will be the principal town event, and will take the form of a huge procession, which is to start from the Masonic Hall, Childers Road, at 10.30 a.m. It will go to the Post Office and thence up Gladstone Road, down Carnarvon Street, and up Childers Road to the Victoria Domain, where the ‘sports will take place. The order of the procession will he as follows: —Cyclists in fancy dress; Borough Council vehicles, led by the big iStraker waggon; Cook County Council vehicles, including the road-grader, which'’will be jgaily* decorated for the occasion; the Fire Brigade, in full strength, with appliances and vehicles; ■ Salvation Army Band; Waterside'Workers’ Union; Independent Order of Oddfellows, Star cf Gisborne Lodge, and Pride of Gisborne Lodge; Freezers’ Union; Hiberians; Drivers’ Union; Loyal Orange Lodge; Slaughtermen’s Union; Butchering trades display, with vehie’es of local tradesmen; Ancient Order of Foresters; Bakers’ Union; Bakery Trades’ Display, with carts of local tradesmen; United Ancient Order of Druids, Lodge Tnranganui; Painters’ Union; Painters’ trade display; City Band; Comic and Fancy features; Carriers’ display; and Tradesmen’s turnouts generally. An attractive sports programme will be presented and in addition to varied athletic events, there will be races for ’ children.

A feature that is sure to be popular is the baby show, to which entrance is free. The judges will he Doctors Reeve Schumacher, and AYi l son. The judging will take place at the grandstand at 3 p.m. In connection with the procession Mr Spencer has promised to give a watch for the best carriers’ display, and there will be other prizes. Air 11. Mackintosh has declared the following handicaps for the events allotted to the Poverty Bay Civil Service Sports Association: 100yds Handicap.—Gedye scr, Rutherford and Gallon lyd, Benefield and Huston 2yds, Bust and Brad’ey 3vds, Lowe and Mathias 4yds, AVhoeler, Payne, Auld and File syds. Maher and Dwver Gvds, and McCoemb 7vds.

Half-mile.—Gedye ser, Rutherford and Gallop 10yds, Bmisfield and Bust 15 yds. Huston, Bradley, and Mathias 20yds, Wheeler and Payne 23yds. Auld 30vds, File. Maher, and Dwver 35vds.

The Afuruvni race meeting will take p'aro on the Club’s course at Pakowhai. and the first event will be run at 1130 a.ni. If sufficient inducement offers Messrs Redstone’s brake will leave the Masonic Corner at 9 a.m. This will be the first meeting brought off under the Unregistered Clubs’ Association auspices. in the afternoon there will be driving and eflmr competitions on the Poverty Biv Golf Club’s links, which will commence at 1.30 p.m. At night a fancy dress calico, social and ball is sure to attract a rood crowd to the Garrison Hall. will be held under the :iusp : ces of the Cook County Women's Guild and its object is to raise money towards the recently execu+ed extension of the creche. The City Rami will bo in attendance, and there will be a prize far the best fancy costume. At His Majesty’s Theatre a new picture show will open in the form of Cooper's Operaseope. and will be augmented by a musical programme.
