MATAWHERO STOCK SALES

The weekly stock sale at Matawhero yesterday was larger than usual, there being a big yarding, mostly of owes and lambs, amounting to something like 3000 head. The weather was ideal and there was a good attendance, •tiding being (fairly brisk throughout. The class of stock onered was much on a par with that of the last few sales, the most noticeable feature being a very nice pen of 42 ewes and 4S lambs!" offered on account of Mr. Murphy. of Te Arai. These were sold after keen competition at .01 Os 3d each which constitutes the top price so far for the season. Messrs Williams and Kettle yarded these and nearly 2000 other sheep, with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., the following being the prices of some of tho other lots: —36-t ewes in lamb 12s. 277 hoggets 12s Bd. 107 empty ewes 9s 3d. 247 with lamb 11s 6d, 157 4-tooth wethers 12s 7d, 107 hoggets 10s 4d. 33 wethers 13s lOd, 107 owes 10s. 34 empty ewes 8s Id. 47 emptv ewes 10s. 23 owes and lambs at foot 14s. 57 hoggets 10s Bd, 8 hoggets 6s 6d. 14 empty ewes 8s 6d. 597 mixed hoogets passed in at 10s 6d. The fat sheep, the sale of which started the day, fetched the following unices:—63 fat'owes 12s, 13 fat wethers 13s 6d. 3S fat wethers 14s 6d, 22 fat owes 11s; 36 wethers were passed in at 13s 9d. Messrs Common. Shelton and Co. with Messrs Dalgetv and Co., yarded 100 sheep and 100 cattle, the former selling as follows:—40 hoggets 4s Id. 50 store sheep 8s lOd, and a few fat ewes at 11s. CATTLE.

There was a fair show of cattle, but bidding was not so brisk as in the case of the sheep. Messrs Williams and Kettle yarded 220 head, the following being some of the lots sold:—Fat cattle : 2 fat cows £'3 10s. 4 fat bullocks £7, 3 fat cows £3 12s 6d, one fat cow £4 2s 6d. Store; cattle: 3 cows and calves £2 Is, 20 empty cows £2 10s. 28 steers £2 11s. 10 heifers £1 15s, 15 heifers £2. Dairy cattle: 1 roan cow £6 10s, 1 heifer £6 10s. 2 two-year-old heifers £2 8s 6d, 1 yellow and white cow £2 10s, 1 dairy cow £3 10s. 2 heifers at £3 each, 2 yearling heifers at £1 15s each. The Loan and Mercantile Company yarded 171 head of cattle, and sold 3.38. Prices were:—Fat Cattle: 1 cow £4, 2 cows £3 12s 6d. 2 heifers £3 12s 6d, 27 steers £4, 9 heifers £1 15s, 2 cows ,-t* 10s. 33 steers £2, 24 heifers. £1 15s. Small lots of store cattle fetched prices ranging from £1 to £2 Cs per head. PIGS. Only a few pens of pigs were offeree, and these were not in great demand. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co. sold 6 porkers at £l, and 3 small pigs at 11s 6d; and Messrs Williams and Kettle sold 3 at 13s each.
