SLY GROG. [Ter Press Association-! MASTERTON, Oct. 15. At the S.M. Court to-day Kate Neilson, boardinghouse keeper, -was fined £35 for keeping liquor for sale. A charge of selling liquor in a no-license district "was dismissed. APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO BAR OPPOSED. WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. The Supreme Court full bench sat today to hear in re Quinn an application to be admitted as a solicitor. The motion was opposed by the Auckland LawSociety upon the ground of alleged unfit character. The applicant, the Society alleged, had been convicted of assault in 1895, and had given way to drink; then further that he had, during some part of his life, resided in Sydney and there carried on the calling of booknisker. Messrs F. E. Ban me, K.C., and HH. Oster appeared for the motion and Mr Earl for the Auckland Law Society to oppose. After hearing argument judgment was reserved. THE KAIAPOI GAOL-BREAKING CASE.

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 15. At the Magistrate’s Court, Kaiapoi, this morning Jas. Gallagher was charged with escaping from the lock-up on October Bth. The accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial. Bail was fixed at £loo'. John and Patrick Gallagher were then charged with aiding in the escape of the prisoner. The charge was dismissed, as was a charge against the same persons of damaging the lockup padlocks. FUNERAL OF CAPTAIN PAVITT. The remains of the late Captain Pavitt were accorded a military funeral to-day. There was a large attendance of volunteers and civilians. The Hon. D. Buddo telegraphed to the Secretary of the Education Board: “Deeply regret to hear of Captain Pavitt’s death. He was a loyal member of the Board’s staff. He will be regretted by all who knew him. Kindly convey m v sympathy to his sorrowing relatives.”
