MUNICIPAL WORKS.
MR. MARCH ANT'S VIEWS. (Special to “Times.") WELLINGTON. October 15. Mr. Marehant had a long conference with Messrs Niven and Co.'s electrical expert and Mr Geo. Nelson on Wednesday last, when Mr. W. D. Lysnar (the Mayor) was also present. The electrical scheme was fully considered, Mr. Marehant making a special point to see that ample provision was made to ensure that there would be no flicker in the light. When he finally expressed himself satisfied on this head, all agreed that by installing the general electricaL scheme £2OOO on the initial cost and £SOO a year on the annual cost would be taken off the drainage figures, through the larger electric scheme being carried out, but Mr. Marehant suggested that in the meantime the original estimates of £16.000 should not be reduced but that a standbp- engine and dynamo should be installed in case of accident, the cost of which would be taken out of saving, and any balance can then be deducted from drainage figures. There was a further long conlerence yesterdav afternoon between Mr. Marchant and Mr Jarrett, when the Mayor (Mr Lysnar) was present. The quarrying and haulage questions were considered. Mr. Marehant worked out his estimates independently irom Mr. Jarrett, with the result that his detail charges showed Gentle Annie metal delivered on the street by Straker waggon should cost 5s 4d ; but to allow an extra safe margin for incidentals it was decided to allow 6s as the cost, and gravel from Kaitaratahi screened and delivered on road would cost 3s 6d per yard, including spreading and breaking. Air. .Tarrett’s estimate for metal from Gentle Annie was os 6d, with a possible further contingent cost of 6d. As both experts’ figures practically agree, the question of the screening of gravel was left over to see if anything can be arranged with the Railway Department for the use of twenty special hopper waggons.
