BIVOUAC POSTPONED. Owing to the wet weather, the East Coast Mounted Rifles did. not bivouac at Mr. Scott’s this week-end, as intended. Captain Evans decided that the object he had in view could not be so successfully carried out under adverse weather conditions as on a fine day, and there being no object in subjecting his men to the discomfort of bivouacking in the rain, the turnout was postponed. Though not actually demanding fine weather, the work would not have been so instructive if carried out under the conditions that existed on Saturday and yesterday. The decison to cancel the parade was telephoned to the troop officers at :v0 on Saturday afternoon, and the Gisborne and Makauri men did not assemble at the Garrison Hall. The Te Karaka men, however, were already mobilised, and in spite of the weather their officer, • Lieutenant Poynter, decided to parade, and accordingly carried out in part their share of the afternoon’s programme. Captain Evans, accompanied by Squadron Sergeant-Major Sprang, rode out to Kaitaratahi during the afternoon, and inspected the troops, expressing himself very well pleased with their muster and appearance. The horses looked exceptionally well. . The muster was a very credita one, 18 men parading out of a roll number of 21. It has not yet been decided when the contemplated bivouac will take place.
