THE KANAKANAIA ROAD.

A QUESTION IN THE HOUSE

(Special to “Times.”) -WELLINGTON Oct. 20. To-day Mr. MacDonald asked the Minister of Public Works whether he will put a substantial sum on the Estimates for improving and metalling the road from the Kanakanaia bridge at Te Karaka to the Kanakanaia settlement, and stated that this road is in a deplorable condition during the winter months and is quite impassable for wheeled traffic. Tfie settlers are paying a 1 heavy annual rent to the Grown, also a ’heavy general and special rate to the County Council, and it would be a great injustice to further penalise these settlers by increased rating to get road access to their holdings. . The Minister said: No application has hitherto been made for a grant for; this road, but as the hon. gentleman has now raised the question I am asking a report on the matter from the resident engineer, and the financial aspect of the question will receive attention when the Public Works Estimates are being framed.
