BILLIARD COMPETITIONS.
CHARGE OF GAMBLING QUASHED. * Ll*mt Press Association.l CHRISTCHURCH, October 20. A decision of. some interest in connection with -the Licensing ; Act was given this morning bv Mr. Bailey, S.M James Savage, licensee of the Royal Hotol, Ambefloy, was charged with permitting gambling in the hotel. It appeared that a billiard tournament had been held in the hotel. Prizes were given by outsiders who did not play. No entrance or. subscription fees were paid by competitors. Mr. Cassidy, for tlie licensee, contended that to consttute gambling there must be both winning and losing, fiefe there was no question of loss to anyone and only possible gain * for. tSho sxiccessful player. The Magistrate upheld the contention, and the information was dismissed. , ~ ■
