R. Newall Arber, of Cambridge, writing to the “Times” expresses , a hope that the section of the fossil pine tree iretained by Professor David will prove a more certain specimen of fossil flora than those brought home by members of the Discovery expedition. 'He adds’ that Professor Nathorist, of Stockholm, i is publishing a paper dealing with lower oolite floras discovered by the Swedish Antarctic expedition. Thess bear an extraordinary resemblance to the lower oolite flora of the Yorkshire coasts.

PROFESSOR DAVID INTERVIEWED

SYDNEY, Oct. 21. Professor David, interviewed in reference to the above cable, stated that one of the specimens of sandstone obtained by Lieutenant iShackleton in the vicinity of the previously reported -coal seams, was examined by the Geological Department of Sydney -University, and found to contain a .fragment of coniferous wood with the structure fairly well preserved, and distinct traces of medullary rays, such as is found in pine woods. It proves that the coal seani in 85 degrees south was partly formed Jby wood derived from forests of pine trees flourishing within five geological degrees of the South Pole.
