During the twelve months ending with March last one inspector, two detectives, two sergeants, and seven constables were retired with annual al- , lowances and placed on the Police Provident Fund. There were, on March 31st four ex-inspectors, twenty-three ex-sergeants, forty-six ex-constables, four ex-detectives, and two widows on the fund, and their aggregate annual allowance being £7529 15s 7d. The balance-sheet of the fund shows that on March 31st there was a credit balance of £31,813 7s XOd, being'an increase of £1276 2s 3d on the amount at the corresponding date of the preceding yea*. During the cruise of the Government training ship Amokura in quest of the missing Duco, two large, schools of whales -were observed when the vessel was several hundred miles off the coast of New Zealand. One of the schools (says the “Post”) was composed of the “sulphur bottom” variety, and the, other of “finbacks.” There were among the former, reported Captain Hooper, some cetaceans, between fifty and seventy feet long. “The sulphur bottom whale is bf very little value from a commercial of view, and is exceedingly difficult to capture.
