TENNIS.

GISBORNE LAWN TENNIS CLUB. The lawn of the Gisborne Tennis Club presented a picturesque appearance on Saturday afternoon when the opening of the season took place. The courts were alive with handled players, and the smart frocks of the ladies who were present lent a bright touch of color to the scene. Four courts were kept going all the afternoon, the other two, which are on a lower level, being still a trifle soft after the overnight rain. Those played on were in excellent condition, and the numerous sets proved very enjoyable both to participants and spectators. There was quite a big crowd present including several outside visitors and members of the Whataupoko Club. A pleasant feature of the afternoon was a musical programme given bv the Vita Brothers’ orchestra, and tea was provided By the lady members of the club. There was no formal opening ceremony, but towards the close of the afternoon Mr. F. W. C-rawford photographed a group of those present to commemorate the occasion. The season’s prospects are very bright for the club, there being over a score more members than last year. Already a tournament lias been arranged, and two trophies have been offered, one being from the president, Mr. Thos. Coleman.
