PUBLIC SCHOOL SPORTS.
MEETING GF ASSOCIATION
The sixth annual general meeting of the Poverty Bay Public School Sports Association was held in the Gisborne School on Saturday morning. Air. F. J. Rowley presided, and a good number of members attended. The committee’s report, read by the secretary, (Mr. R. Cole), showed that for some considerable time the Association had not met with the outside and miblic support that it should, and if the Association was to continue some means would have to be found to get that'support, without which it seemed almost jiopeless to continue. The past year was a rather unfortunate one. The annual sports -were fixed for November 26th, 1908. That date had been altered, as the election for the members of Parliament made it impossible for schools to close. Examinations were being held right up to the end of the school year after that date, and the only thing to do was to postpone the sports until the following year, and this was done. The sports were held on March 11th, 1909, in Messrs McKenzie’s paddock, AVaihirerc. After referring to the success ef the sports, the report stated that the thanks of the Association were due to Messrs McKenzie Bros., who not only placed their grounds at the disposal of the committee, but also went to a great deal of trouble in getting them ready; also tO' Air. E. P. Joyce for the handsome shield presented for competition among the girls. Alessrs E. JChrisp and T. Alston Comeman assisted the funds of the Association by generous contributions. The finances, as given in the balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l3 4s Bd. The Chairman said that the committee had met on October 2, and considered the report, and it was decided to recommend that the sports be held this year on November 25, and that after this year the schools give, during the afternoon, a number of displays of drill. It was also thought advisable in future years to hold the sports either at the Park or A ictoria Domain. After the report and recommendations had been adopted it was decided to hold further business over to a subsequent meeting.
