Tho Clifton colliery has been idle for some time owing to the miners refusing to work while two men, who refused to pay fines inflicted by tho Miners’ Union for alleged breaches of the rules, wero retained. Summonses have been issued against 187 of the employees on a charge of absenting 'themselves from employment avithout leave. The first case was opened to-day, and adjourned. Counsel for the defence states: “We have exhausted all hope of settlement, and there must now be a fight to a finish.” It is reported that the strikers are relying on promises of financial support from other coluery districts. Wider complications are not improbable.
