AN INTERESTING POINT

Mr. Hanlon raised a new point in the licensing law case wherein Couglilan, of the Provincial Hotel, was charged with selling liquor to an intoxicated person. Though the sa'.e was actually made by the barman, Mr. Hanlon argued that the section of the Licensing Act, 1908, which provides for the punishment of a person other than the licensee who sells to an intoxicated man limits the action of the section providing for the punishment of the landlord; in other words, that if the barman in disobeying the express instructions of the landlord also commits a punishable offence against the law by such disobedience, the landlord is not responsible, the servant not then being his_ “alter ego.
