CATHEDRAL BUILDINGS.
BISHOP NEVILL’S IDEAS. fPint Press Association.l DUNEDIN, October 25. In the opening of the Anglican Diocesan Synod this afternoon, _ Bishop Nevill, referring to the building of a new cathedral, pressed the claim for a large building wherein oratorios could be rendered, or where people could assemble as members of one Empire rather than as 'members of one congregation. The large attendamce at meetings of travelling evangelists seemed to point to the fact that religion must find expression in sonie spasmodic and emotional way. “The drifting of our Wesleyan fellow churchmen from their allegiance,” he said, “is owing to it. This modern condition calls for' a repetition of ancient provision in the plans of cathedral bunding, which includes a large nave not used for stated services, but for special occasions. The Dunedin Cathedral ought to have a choir and sanctuary largo enough to receive an ordinary congregation, and have it separated from the nave by a suitable screen. This part of the church should be consecrated and set apart from the celebration of sacraments and divine worship generally, and the nave to be unconsecrated and great liberty of usage and teaching allowed therein. I am not one of those who can join a jeremaid,” he says, “as to the smallness of the number of young men who attend church services. In tlie several churches of the diocese there is little, if any, disparity between the numbers of the sexes.”
