Colonel Seely, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, replying ,to Sir Charles said, that the decrease of the native population of the Pacific Islands was a problem of extreme, complexity. The. Government had no special reports in regard to the New Hebrides. He hoped j, that the extension of settled govern- - ment and the prohibition of the sale of arms and liquor , would check the decrease. ♦
