While the cruiser Hogue was refitting at Devonport an explosion of coal gas in the stokehold badly burned eight stokers. A sudden sheet of flame from the bunker enveloped the men.

[The Hogue is a first-class cruiser of 12,000 tons, 21,000 horsepower, 21 knot speed, and 14 guns, launched in 1900.]
