SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
GISBORNE. The monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was bold at the public.,school premises last night. Mr. J. Somervell nresided, anil there were also present Miss Morice, Airs. .Walker. Mr. A. Spence, the ltev. L. Dawson Thomas, and M.'F, Riach. Air. G. Crawsliaw, secretary of the Hawke’s Bay. Education Board, wrote enclosing a copy of the Inspector’s report, .remarking that the maintenance of the school in- the highest state of efficiency was the clcsiro of the Board, •and asking the active, co-operation of the Committee in carrying out such recommendations contained in the report as properly came within a Committee s duties, such as those regarding the state of the ground® and buildings, and the cleanliness of the rooms, apparatus and out-offices. 'The Board also requested that the report might be sent to the headmaster, so ‘ that matters dealing with school organisation, teaching. and control might receive the attention the Inspector deemed neeessaiy for the improvement of the school. The secretary of the Board also lor' warded a memorandum of the following motion carried at the last meeting of the Board: “That- No. 1 of the Board s regulations be amended to read — Ino grant from the Education Board must be applied by each. Committee to the following purposes: Keeping clean the school building and outhouses, spouting and tallies : providing luel; repairing windows, blinds, spouting, doors, furniture, fences, and outhouses; keeping the grounds clean and in good order, and, trees and hedges topped and timimed. The cost of any of -the- aboyennmed repairs that may be effected by the Board’s 1 workmen shall be deducted from the allowance to the Committee The Headmaster, Air. F. J. Row ey, reported that the attendance since last meeting had been poorer than for months past, being 89.7 per cent ot the roll number. It had averaged /87, and the roll was now 877. Aliss Adams had applied, to the Board of Education for extended'leave of absence, which bad been granted, and Aliss G. Evans bad consented to fill her place. Miss M. Burden took up her duties on the cVaff at the beginning of the month. The work recommended by the Committee and 1 authorised bv the Board of Education had not yet been started. Some of the work-was urgent The. Chairman intimated that he would attend to certain necessary repair to a fence and outhouse connected with the- school. Air. Somervell also added that he ha‘d arranged with the hank for an '-verdrnft of £4O to pay off the liability i’o” attendance medals, providing that fmembers of the Committee, Messrs Rbveh. Dawson Thomas, Spence, and himself, became guarantors. The Chabnum suggested that as the Education Board’s day of meeting had been altered to the last Thursday in the month, tliei Committee’s date should a 1 so be changed. It- was resolved that the meeting night- accordingly be altered to the second Friday in the month.
