Messrs 'Richardson and Co.’s Ruru arrived from 1 Napier with a general cargo early yesterday morning, and left during the afternoon on her return trip. The Huddart-Parker Co.’s Wimmera arrives from south this morning, anti proceeds later for Auckland and Sydney, the last launch leaving at 10 a.m. The following passengers have honked: For Auckland—Misses Hay, Bathurst, Caldwell, Kent, B. Co.’s Monowam returns from Auckland to-morrow afternoon, and leaves during the evening in continuation of her trip South. The Tuatea leaves the wharf on arrival and again at 5 p.m. As a great many wil be travelling, passengers are advised to book before the local office closes this afternoon. . The schooner Awantii left Whitianga on Wednesday last. She brings a cargo of timber to Gisborne for Messrs Evans, Nicld and Co. , The U.S.S. Co.’s Wanaka is expected to load at Bluff on November 3, Oainaru November 4, Timaru November 5, and should arrive at Gisborne about November 9. The U.S.S. Co.’s Flora was working Coast ports yesterday, and should arrive here to-morrow. A return of the Jives lost by wreck, drowning, or other accidents r*. sea and in rivers and harbors in British seagoing merchant ships during the year 1908 shows that the total number of passengers, masters, and seamen who lost their lives was 1139, the number of casualties at sea being 722 and in rivers and harbors 417. With the exception of the years 1906 and 1904, this total is the loAvest recorded during the past eighteen years, the most fatal year being 1894, when the total loss of life was 3071—namely, 1874 masters and seamen, and 1197 passengers, ihe number -of masters and seamen , who lost their lives last year was 1047,; .the number of passengers drowned was only 92fi this number including the passengers lost from the s.s 'Sardinia, of: Liverpool.
