THE ANGLICAN CONGRESS
THE WHITE AUSTRALIA QUESTION. United Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE, October 28. Bishop Riley 7 inaugurated the Anglican Congress. He uttered a warning to the dangers ahead over 'the racial questions. “He said:-“We demand a white Australia. Has anyone ever considered what it meant, what it would cost, and who would pay the cost Was Australia to play dog in the, manger? We could hear other nations saying, ‘What right lias Australia to hold such a large tract of country and do nothin<J*witih it ?’* 5 * Dealing with the question of reunion of the churches, he declared that- nothing more could be done, at present. He could favor no scheme which left out the Latin and, Greek churches.. ; MELBOURNE, October 29, The Anglican Congress discussed the Wihte Australia question. Divergent views were expressed as to the probable result of an Asiatic overflow to Australia. Archdeacon Whittington said that if by a White Australia it was intended to carefully guard racial purity he was altogether in favor of it, but he was afraid his labor friends meant a good deal more, and intended the entire exclusion of colored races. He suggested'that consideration-might be given to the suggestion to develop tropical Australia by mebhs of indentured labor. Canon Stephen said it was not a difference of civilisation,, but a difference. of religion, and for the sake' of religion the white Australia policy was a right one. The Bishop of Brisbane considered the white Australia principle -unChristian. The only alternative to having colored races was to leave empty the Northern Territory, and the '.attraction of the empty' North would be greater than if we attempted to fill it. The only solution of the trouble was indentured labor. He was heretic enough to believe that the salvation of the North was Kanaka labor.
