CHEMIST FINED FOR ITS SALE. fPicit Press Association.! AUCKLAND, October 29. In the Police Court, Harold Wiles, chemist was charged with having sold liquor without a license, viz., Alolcndo old quinine port wine. The magistrate said the analysis showed the wine was ordinary port, with the addition of oneninth of a grain of quinine to the fluidounce of the wine. Defendant contended that as a chemist he was expressly exempted from the Licensing Act regarding the sale of liquor without a license. The magistrate held that in order that defendant should come within the exemption it must be clear that the wine was sold for medicinal purposes. Alolendo was sold at a comparatively low price, 3s a bottle, and was a palatable beverage. It was not supplied by doctor’s prescription, and no inquiries were made at the time of sale as to the purpose for which the wine might be required. Alolendo was not what might be described as an official or recognised medicinal preparation. Defendant "was convicted and fined £5.
