SUICIDE OF A SHIPWRIGHT. fPr.u Press Association.! WELLINGTON. October 30. A shipwright named Henry- Mitchell was found dead, in* his lodgings . last night, with a wound in the calf of his right lef. A razor and pocket knife were on'the floor near his bed. Deceased had been drinking in the afternoon. He had never threatened suicide and did not appear to be in trouble. SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN. . CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 31. Collections were taken up in the streets yesterday in aid of the funds for general objects of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and resulted in £6l being obtained. HORRIBLE RAILWAY FATALITY. ASHBURTON, October 30. Another shocking railway accident occurred yesterday afternoon, when in shunting operations at Hinds a young porter named John Richards, aged about 19 or 20, caught, his foot in a block and fell across the rails in front of the engine. The locomotive passed over him, frightfully crushing his thigh iand almost severing his leg, mutilating both, hands, and breaking his left arm. The victim who retained consciousness till chloroform and morphia were injected, was brought into the Ashburton Hospital in a critical state. Richards had been at the Hinds only a few months, having been transferred there from Rangiora. Richards, the victim of the railway accident, died at 12.30 a.m. to-day. .
