SYDNEY, Oct. 29. At the half-yearly meeting of the Colonial Sugar Company, the net profit was stated to be £IOB,BBO, making with the added balance £225,351. A dividend of 5 per cent, for the halfvear was declared, and £82,882 was carried forward. CLIFTON COLLIERY STRIKES. SYDNEY, Oct. 29. In the first of the Clifton colliery strike cases a charge of absenting himself from work resulted in favor of defendant. There was great jubilation amongst the strikers. ANTI-BOXING BILL LAPSES. MELBOURNE, Oct, 29. The Assembly was counted out whilst discussing the Bill to stop boxing contests. The Bill lapsed. BIRD DAY. Bird Day, which will be an annual event, was observed at the public schools. The lessons were devoted wholly to birds. A practical result was that over 50,000 scholars became members of the Bird Protection Society. INSURANCE LIBEL.CASE. In the libel case Mr Irvine, director of the National Mutual Life Society, gave evidence that the Board of Directors neither knew of or sanctioned the publication of the article by their agents, and had nothing to do with certain advertisements in the “Clarion.” The directors have fined one agent £IOO and administered a severe rebuke in connection with the matter. > PARLIAMENT AND MELBOURNE CUP. The House of Representatives arranged for an adjournment to allow members to attend the Cup race meeting. THE HOPETOWN POST OFFICE OUTRAGE. PERTH, Oct. 30. A man has been arrested in connection with the Hopetown post office outrage. AN OPPONENT TO HENNIIvER HEATON. LONDON, Oct. 29. Mr Goldney, Mayor of Canterbury, a Unionist, threatens jto oppose Mr Henniker Heaton’s re-election. A bitter personal quarrel exists. Mr Goldney invites legal proceedings to establish Lis assertions.
