TOWN v. COUNTRY. Considerable interest was taken in the above match, which was played at Taruheru on Saturday. Play Commenced at' 10.30, when the weather-was favorable, and the wicket perfect. W. Gibson captained the Town eleven, while W. Dods led the Country side. The latter won the toss, and decided to bat. A sensational start iVas made: Sharpies clean bowled Bisdeo with the first ball of the match. This bad beginning seemed to upset the majority of the Country batsmen, who were palpably out of form, and 38 was the meagre total on the score-board when the last wicket fell. Sharpies and McMahon .bowled exceptionally well during the first part of the innings, while Adamson, and Davies also met with success in the closing stages. At the luncheon adjournment the Town eleven had lost two wickets for 101. J-his total was hoisted as the result of a fine partnership by Lasker and Hodge tor the third wicket, the partnership taking the score from 41 to 101. On resuming tho total was- earned to 117, when a separation Was brought about by Bis See taking Hodge beautifully low down in the slips, off Oates. Hodge showed some of his old-time form in running up his score of 31. Lasker did not survive much longer, as with In's total at 69 he was clean bowled by Oates after a capital innings marked by a combination of sound defence_ and clean hard-hitting. , The remaining batsmen did little against the bowling of Oates and Bisdee, and the innings closed for a total of .154. W. Oates and Bisdee bore the brunt of the attack for the Country team, and captured most of the wickets, the former sending down 114 balls and the latter 6 °ln their second innings the Country men showed much better form. Lhe wicket played much faster than ,’t had done in the morning, and Bisdee, J. It. Murphy, Pilcher, Oates, Sharp, and Stevens all scored freely. Bisdee and Murphy both played attractive cricket. Hooker was the most successful bowler, and secured five wickets for 39 runs, off 42 balls, all his victims being clean bowled. With 26 runs to get to win, the Town team lost four wickets m securing the required number, and thus won by six wickets. The match was a most enjo3 r able one, and the Country plavers expressed the wish that a return match might be played this season. Colonel Winter and Messrs Beenan and Mawhinney acted as umpires, and the plavers were fortunate in securing the services of three such capable officials. The teams lunched togethor on "tho ground. .Llig hopo "Weis expressed that the fixture would be made an annual one, and that more frequent meetings might take place between the representatives of the Town and Country.
