V.R.C. MEETING. United Press Association—Copyright. (Received October 30, 6.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 30. The Victoria Racing Club’s meeting opened to-day in delightfully cool weather. Plemington was looking its best, and there was a large and fashionable attendance, including the GovernorGeneral and Lady Dudley, the State Governor (Sir Thos. Carmichael) and Lady Carmichael, Lord. Chelmsford (Governor of Queensland) and Lady Chelmsford, and Sir 11. Barron (Governor of Tasmania). The programme opened with the Maiden Plate, which was captured by Barm, the New Zealand bred Gunpowder running rather disappointingly. The Man by r non g Stakes was a gift to Desert Rose, who", like Lager, ..Roseau, the other placed horses, and Barm, the winner of the previous race, avas sired by Maltster. In the Hotham Handicap, Delaware ran a good race, leading with Vivacious most of tlie journey, but being beaten to fourth place in the finish. iSeddon was only once prominent. The Derby was a good race. Most of the running was made by Lord Foote, who led the field at a merry pace. Entering the home turn Prince Foote came away, winning easily, to the great delight of the crowd, who eagerly predicted him as a Cup winner on the form he displayed. The Melbourne Stakes was a rattling good race. AJawa, another of Maltster’s progeny, scoring after a fine finish with Trafalgar. The New Zealand bred Golden Slipper was always prominent in the race, but could not get nearer than third. Owing to his earlier efforts, Artillerie was near the end of the field most of the time, hut finished sixth, full of running. Kerlie, sired by Stepniak, accounted for the Coburg Stakes, in a smartly-run race, beating the Maltster gelding Malmsey by three lengths, Son of a Gun two lengths away third. Montcalm looked like winning at one time. Artillerie failed to show' up at, all in this race. The following were the results:—Melbourne Stakes, 1£ mile —Alawa 1, Trafalgar 2, Golden Slipper 3. Other starters were: Knox, Post Town, Blue Book, Gaby, Pendil, Hyman* Lord Nolan, Artillerie, and Nuslika. Hyman and Golden Slipper made most of the running, with Alawa always lying handy. Trafalgar, Alawa, and Golden Slipper swung round the home turn together, Alawa winning by a length and a-half. Golden Slipper was six lengths away third. Time, 2min 7 2-see. Maribyrnong Stakes, 5 furlongs.— Desert Rose 9.1, 1; Lager 8.5, 2; Roseen 8.5, 3. Also started: Nobel, Indiscreet,’ Rigadoon, Rollingstcme, Rhe ims, Gunplay, Flamen, Tanami, Procne, Carcant, Keru, Teringa, and Baza. Prince Foote and Danilo then caught him, Prince Foote dashing out and winning easily by six lengths, a head separating' Lord Foote and Danilo. Lady San was fourth, Byplay fifth.
