WORKERS IN CONFERENCE.

SAWMILL WORKERS’ UNIONS

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. The New Zealand Sawmill Workers Unions commenced their conference today. Mr. J. Alswciler (Southland) was elected president, and Mr. Tuffen (Otago) secretary. The biggest question of the moment, said the president in his opening address, was undoubtedly the matter of conserving and preserving the timber resources of New Zealand. He emphasised the importance of urging the Government to do something in this direction. The conference affirmod the principle of federation of timber workers, and agreed to recommend the sawmill unions to federate in one body.

THE FURNITURE TRADE

Delegates representing the workers of the furniture trades of New Zealand met in conference to-day. Mr. G. Sullivan (Christchurch) was elected chairman. It was decided to form a federation of furniture trades, the name of the federation to be “The New Zealand Furniture Trades Industrial Association of Workers.” The objects of the federation are to effect 'unity in different furniture trades, and to further the interests of workers engaged in the trade.
