AN EXTRAORDINARY BLUNDER.
A BIG GUN COMPETITION THAT DID NOT TAKE PLACE.
I'Peii Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. An extraordinary position has occurred in connection with the proposed big gun match between, the Auckland and 'petone Garrison. Artillery gunners., Some time ago the Aucklanders suggested a match with the Petone corps. The latter agreed on the condition that the Defence authorities gave permission.; To the great surprise of the Petone men, 60 gunners of No. 1 Company, Auckland Garrison Artillery Volunteers, under Captain Kingrett, Lieut. Greenough, and Sergeant-Major Murray, arrived on Saturday night at Fort TCelburnc, where the Petone corps was camped, and announced that they had come to engage in a six-inch gun competition with the local men. The visitors were accommodated at the camp for the night, the Petone men going home in the meantime. As the Defence Department had not been asked for permission, the match will not take place and the Auckland men leave on the return journey to-day. , Colonel Robin says he cannot understand what, officers and men were thinking about to attempt to carry out such schemes without the permission of the responsible authorities. The cost of the trip, about £l5O, was borne wholly by the visitors. .
