ASSAULT CASE.

STREET BRAWL IN. GISBORNE

Tlie sequel to the disturbance that occurred in Peel Street on Monday afternoon was heard in the Police Court before Mr Wl A. Barton, S.M., yesterday, when Emma Carter was charged with having assaulted Arthur Alex. Scott. The woman's pugilistic performance had drawn a large crowd tho previous day and the Court wa,s filled with people eager to witness the next act of the drama. The aecused'was neatly attired, wearing a sailor hat and stiff collar and tie, She appeared none the worse for her night in the station, though her demeanour was calmer than when the public of Gisborne last saw her. The victim of the assault, whose eyebrow showed signs of at least one hard blew having got home on it, was waiting about the Court to give evidence if necessary. He was not called upon, however, for the accused pleaded “guilty” to the charge. Sergeant Hutton related to the Bench what he knew of the disturbance. The trouble, it appeared, started in the British Empire Hotel, and the woman followed the man outside, and proceeded to rain blows unon The victim did not attempt to- retaliate, and as the. accused wore several rings, he got rather damaged, and had to go into a chemist's shop to get his wounds seen to. The woman was slightly under the influence of drink, and the whole affair seemed to be the outcome of a drunken brawl. His Worship (to accused) : Have you nothing to say about this? “Nothing whatever,” replied the woman coolly. A fine of 10s and 2s costs, or 48 hours’, was the penalty for what His Worship described as “very disgraceful and unwomanly conduct.”
