V.R.C. MEETING—PRINCE FOOTE WINS TPIE MELBOURNE CUP.

United Press Association —Copyright. (Received November 2, 7.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. • 2. For Melbourne Cup day there was magnificent weather, and an enormous attendance, including a vast number of visitors. Inter-State and country trains were crowded, and all the accommodation in Melbourne was' taxed to the utmost. The Victoria Racing Club committee entertained a distinguished company at luncheon, including Lord and Lady Dudley, Sir Thos. and Lady Carmichael. Lord and Lady Chelmsford, and Sir Henry Barron. It was estimated that the attendance was a record. In many places it was difficult to move owing to the denselypacked crowd. Intense excitement prevailed over the Cup. Public opinion was divided in favor of Prince Foote, Aiawa, and Trafalgar. It was a beautiful race, McLachlan, on the Derby winner, watching his opportunity, sailed home amid tremendous cheering, having won in time equal to' the best Cup records. The jockey McLachlan rode Prince Foote for the first time, and describes him as the gamest horse he ever rode. Racing started with the Cup Hurdles, which King’s Ransom appropriated, Bribery’s heavy weight telling, although he battled gamely, with Last Mistake in third place. The New Zealander Ngauruhoe made a dashing win in the Railway Handicap, coming away at the half-distance in clinking style. Ngauruhoe was not much fancied by the public. The Nursery Handicap brought out 16 starters, the winner turning up in Roseen. who ran third in byrnong Plate. A number of horses fell in the Steeplechase, robbing it of interest. No serious injuries occurred. Seventeen accepted for the Yan Yean Stakes, which went to Son of the Marsh, who was prominent from the start. Golden Slipper came fifth, after a good showing. The other New Zealand bred horse Waipuna, performed moderately. The following were the results: Cup Hurdle Race, 3 miles.—King’s Ransom 9.13, 1; Corntax 11.12, 2; Bribery 12.3, and Last Mistake 11.12, a dead heat. Passing the stand: Idyll took command from Eric, Trafalgar, Kooringa, Gaby, Ungarie, Lord Nolan, and Danilo last. Going out pf the straight Idyll still led, but was challenged by Delaware, who ran in blinkers, the field bunching well up. They raced well together round the back of the course, Erie, Aiawa, King’s Cross, and Artillerie being prominent, and Trafalgar going great guns, running next, and Eric four lengths from Aiawa. As they rushed into the straight Trafalgar, Eric, and Aberdeen were in close attendance, and the ethers came together in a bunch, pimce Foote shot out amidst terrific cheering, and won handsomely by three lengths, a head separating Aiawa and Aberdeen.
