OPENING OF VARIOUS GREENS

The Dunedin Bowling Club on'Saturday last opened the season’s play, and also their new pavilion, which is a roomy, well-equipped building. Mr. G. Crow (president of the club) expressed regret that the weather was so disagreeable. The club was formed thir-ty-eiglit years ago, and the first game was played on the green in December, 1872. Many changes had taken place since that time, and of the original 106 members, lie was sorry to say, very few remained. The club had been first known as the Dunedin Bowling and Quoiting Club. The quoiting ground eventually disappeared, and the club ■then became the Dunedin Bowling, Lawn Tennis -and Fives Club. The two latter games died out, and to-day the club existed is a bowling club simply. The green 01 anally consisted of four rinks, then it consisted of eight rinks, and now two additional rinks had been made, which provided ten rinks for play. The navilion had been found to be too small for requirements, and had been pulled down and a new one, with largely increased accommodation, erected in -another spot, special attention haying been paid to accommodation for ladies, who, they hoped, would favor them with their presence during the season.

There was a good attendance of members and visitors at the opening of the Caversbam Green. The green, says the “Dunedin Star,” has been -wonderfully improved since last season. In the absence of the president (Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P.), the green was declared open by Mr. A. MacGregor, vice-president, and Mrs. Sidey formally opened the green by rolling the first bowl of the season. Despite the elements and the fact Dmt the green was not at all playable, Caledonians turned put in goodly numbers to the official opening of their season last Saturday afternoon, says the “Dunedin Star.” The function, as first arranged, was intended to be particularlv /a “ladies’ day,” but each member seemed to have decided to come alone. At 2.30 o’clock the formal opening took place. It was indeed formal. The president (Air. C. F. Greenslade) steuped out from the balcony, rol.jpd up a “kitty,” followed with a good bowl, and then declared the season open for the “Cale.” Green. A cheer followed his opening, and no speeches were made, the large number present settling down to an afternoon’s festivity, The secretary (Air. A. W. Brown) says' that the prospects for the season are favorable, there being a membership of 105 —an increase of fifteen on last

year—ninety-six being Mayers. The green is as true as ever, and the surrounding banks have been rebuilt and put down in ’ fresh grass. The Hamilton (IVai'kat-o) Bowling Club had a most successful opening on Wednesday last (writes the ‘‘New Zealand ' Herald” correspondent). The weather was splendid, the green was in good order, and there was a large attendance, including many visitors. The president (Mr. R. Parr) declared the green open, and Mrs. Parr threw the jack across the green. ’ The Rocky Nook Bowling Club (Auckland) opened its season last Saturday.
