Vatawheko stock sales

In spite of the unsettled weather there was a good attendance at the Matawliero stock sales yesterday/ and' bidding was ■fairly brisk, prices being generally better than on the past few occasions. Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. and Dalgety and Co. were to have offered 400 odd sheep, but a line of 300 was not brought in owing to the had weather. About 50 head of cattle were offered, prices, being obtained as follows: Four steers £3 16s each, 9 heifers £2 17,s (3d, 8 do £3 10s, 4 young heifers £1 18s, 5 steers £2, 3 cows £2. FAT SHEEP. The sheep sold by these firms were shorn, and brought very fair prices. A line of 28 fat ewes 'fetched 8s 7d, 39 do 7s lOd, 19 do 8s 7d, 239 wether hoggets in forward condition Ss' 3d, 29 mixed hoggets 7s 4d, and 23 dry 'ewes Ss. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. yarded 1200 sheep. They commenced their sale as usual with fat stock, as diid Messrs Williams and Kettle, about 220 fat sheep being yarded.. Of these 50 out of a lot of 75 fat ewes (shorn) fetched 8s 6d each, while another line of 31 woolly owes sold at 13s 3d. Other sales were 11 woolly wethers 15s 9d, 10 shorn ewes 8s 7d, 51 prime ewes (shorn) Bs, 13 woolly ©wes 14s, 30 do 14s 2d. STORE SHEEP. There was brisk bidding for the 2300 odd store sheep that were yarded. These were all woolly classes, and fetched good prices, ewes and lambs being in chief demand, and hoggets also going well.' Prices were: 638 hoggets 13,s 3d, 300 do 11s, 105’ ewes with lambs at foot 10s, 191 do 12s, 167 ewes with 175 lambs 13s, 16 small hoggets 7s. 438 hoggets 12s 3d, 119 do i2s Bd, 50 do 12,s lOd, 74 do 10s. CATTLE. The cattle yarded numbered about 500 head, and there was a keen demand for young stock. Those sold included three pens on account of Messrs Murray,. Roberts and Co.' The following were the principal sales : 45 two to two and a-half year old steers £4, 6 young cattle 31s, 15 young heifers £2 Bs, 20 young steers £2 11s, 18 yearling heifers 355, 17 young steers and 29 heifers £2 10s, 26 young steers and a heifer £2 7s 6d, 2 cqws £2 6s, 2 do in forward condition £4, 9 heifers £1 10s, cow and calf £2 10s, 1 heifer £4 15s. Shorthorn bull £l2 12s, springing heifer £6, springing cow £3 15s, 22. heifers £1 6s. 10' steers £1 10s, 1 Ayrshire cross heifer £6, 2 bullocks £4 1/s 6d, 22 young steers £2 Bs, 6 young cattle 31s, 8 cows £2 7s, 2 cows in forward condition £4, and 37 Polled Angus and Hereford cattle £3 11s. Reef cattle sold as follows: Six bullocks £7 11s, Q fat cows £5 6s, 2 do £4 1/s 6d> 2 heifers £4 ss, 2 cows £3 12s 6d, 1 cow £4 7 s 6d, 2 do £4 2s 6d, 1 do £5, 2 do £4 10s, 3 do £4 ss. PIGS. A couple of pens of small pigs brought 12s and 16s respectively. HOME MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and . Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., yesterday received the following cablegram from their London office: —“We quote present spot values for following descriptions or tallow: Fine mutton 34s 6d, good beer 33s 6d, mixed 32s 3d. Market active. As compared with last sales closing rates/prices are 5 to 7/ per cent, lower for merino wool. Prices remain about the same for crossbred.” FROZEN MEAT. ri’i-.n Pnzss Association.] NAPIER, Xov. 4. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company to-day report on the frozen meat market: “There is a further fall in the value of lamb. To-aay s quotations are: Mutton, Canterbury 4§ • Njapier, 'Wellington, and .North Island 4-id; lamb, first quality 4|d, second quality 4/d; beef, hindquarters 3/d, forequarters 2/d. DUNEDIN MARKETS. DUNEDIN, Nov. 4. Locally wheat is in better request, millers making demands and the stock being light. Prime milling is at 4s odi to 4s 6a. For oats there is a, keen demand. Stocks are small. Rest milling sold at Is 9d to Is 9/d. Large' supplies of butter are coming to hand, but there is a poor demand. Rest farmers’ pats are 6d per lb, and separated from 7d to 8d per lb. The prospects of a heavy yield of wheat and oats are really good.
