Herr Dernberg, German Secretary of State for the Colonies, speaking as the guest of the African Society at London, said that the impressions uppermost in his mind after visiting South Africa were the great work done by Englishmen, especially the late Cecil Rhodes, and the spirit of mutual understanding and conciliation that had just accomplished unification of the nation under the British flag. Colonel Seely, British Undersecretary for the Colonies, in a subsequent speech, frankly remarked that the Union of South Africa would have been impossible without the help and cooperation of the Government’s political opponents.
