TOKOMARU FREEZING WORKS

PROGRESS OF THE CONTRACT

The architect for the Tokomaru freeing ivorks, Mr. A. S. Mitchell, of Wellington, who has recently been on a visit to Tokomaru, said in course of conversation with a “Times” representative that the wet weather experienced recently had retarded the progress of the Avonk .somewhat, hut that on the whole most satisfactory, progress had been .made. Brickmaking is in full swing, and, as .already stated in these columns, the manufactured article is of excellent quality, the plant installed by the contractors working very satisfactorily. The work of erecting the workmen’s homes was steadily in progress, and a large cookhouse and dining (room, to accommodate about 80 men, had, -been completed. An excellent water supply is obtained by. means of a pipe line laid to an adjoining creek, and already : two miles "of piping has been laid on the site of the works. Good progress is also being made with the Avliarf for the lighters, and to facilitate the conveyance of material to the works site a tramway three-quarters of a mile in length has been laid down, and is proving of great service. There. .are 45 men at present employed on the contract, and it is probable that the next month or so will be taken up in further brick-making and excavating operations. The Kiritona, the new vessel built to the order of the New Zealand Shipping Company, was expected to arrive at Tokomaru from Whangarei oil Saturday, with a full cargo 'of cement and coal, and she avill be constantly employed in connection with the contract. Mr Mitchell left for Auckland by the s.s. Waikare on Saturday morning, and will return to Wellington via the Main Trunk line.
