A LIBELLOUS The chairman and some members of the Executive Council of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers obtained £IOOO damages against Millman, their late assistant secretary, for a libellous and malicious circular, rellecting on them. BETTING IN UNITED STATES. NEW YORK, Nov. 10. The New York State Court of Appeal upheld the bookmakers’ contention that oral betting had not been prohibited on races. AMERICAN FORTIFICATIONS AT PANAMA. The American fortifications .in the Panama Canal zone are expected to be completed by 1915. HEAT WAVE IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, Nov. 11. The Labor Women’s Convention decided -that women should be eligible to sit in Parliament, and to act as judges and jurors, the object being to ensure more equal protection and sympathetic legislation for women compared with men. LAND TAX AND LAND VALUATION. MELBOURNE, Nov. 11. In the Assembly an amendment proposing to make the Land Tax Bill a Land Valuation Bill was rejected by 40 to 13. OUTRAGE BY A NEGRO. A notorious negro convict named King stabbed and seriously injured a warder named Curtis at Pentridge. By some means he had secured a sharpened piece of steel. BIG FIRE AT A MINE. KALGOORLIE, Nov. 11. A fire destroyed an extensive crushing plant, including much valuable machinery, belonging to the Great Boulder at Perseverance mine. The damage is £40,000 to £50,000, which is covered by insurance. Over 400 employees have been rendered idle by the fire.
