BOWLING.
GISBORNE CLUB
The green of' the Gisborne Bowling Club was in capital order on Saturday ■afternoon, and though the high wind militated -against successful play, several enjoyable games took place. There was an unusually large muster of players, and the results of the principal games wore as follows: Brown, Wilson, Paltridge, Ponsford (skin) 29 beat H. J. Lewis, Wootton, Hookey. Witty (skip) 13. Boulton, Zaehariah, Mackintosh, Ambridge (skip). 27 beat Maher, Pavitt, Dodd, Bright (skip), 14. . Johnstone, Redstone, Corson, Groig \ m g 9 beat Hawkins, W. Pettie, Benzie, F. A. Martin (skip) 14. TURANGANUI CLUB. The Turanganui Club’s rinks were in splendid order on Saturday afternoon, and a number of enjoyable games were played. A match in the Bennett Cup was played, the result being——Bennett Cup.— 1L Hird (holder) 20 beat M. G. 'Nasmith jum* 13.—The first part of the game was in Nasmith’s favor, he being 9 t-o 2 on nine heads. Then Hird putup long jacks, and got in three 3‘s and a 2, which pave him a lead, 13—10. On the 14th head Hird lay four, but Nasmith drew dead on the jack with his last bowl, and then pulled up leeway, till the board showed 13 all. Hird then scored again, and on the 18tli head was 16 to 13. The 19th head was keenly contested, and Nasmith lay two' on a long head, but Hird with a beautiful draw got in a- lovely toucher with his last bowl and scored. Hird now had a lead of four points, with two heads to go. On the 20th head Nasmith lay ono with two handy bowls, and Hire! had two bowls one behind the other, preventing a larger score on Nasmith’s part. The latter, with his last bowl, essayed a drive in his opponents’ two bowls to enable him to score three. He how did not catch the iront bowl full, hitting it on the side and “wicking” it into shot. This head give Hird a lead of five, which he increased to seven on the final head. Hird scored on a total of eleven .heads and Nasmith on ten. The foiowing. is position of tho pi a vers at the conclusion of the first week’s play: —M. G. Nasmtih junr, 2 wins, 1 loss; B. Hird, 2 wins, 0 losses; W. Bruce, 1 win, 1 loss; A. Sawyer, 0 wins, 1 loss; TV. H. Douglas, 0 wins, 2 losses; R. 0. Sheet, M. Neill, V. Hooper. T. McConnell, C. F. Lewis, W. Rated ffe, J. J. Martin, J. Colley, J. P. Williams, O. J. Bennett, P. E. Hailam, M. G. Nasmith, senr, and W. McPherson have not yet commenced their games. —Douglas Feathers.—
At the t conclusion of Saturday’s play the winners nof the Douglas Feathers, Messrs W. Hay and M. G. Nasmith jnr (skip) were presented with the Feathers by tho Presklent of the Club, Mr. W. Bruce, who hoped they would hold the same for some time. Mr. Nasmith suitably responded. Messrs R. The!wall ana J. Colley (.skip) have issued a challenge to the holders of tho Feathers to defend their trophies on Saturday next.
—Challenge Walking Stick.—
Tii the semi-final of the Challenge Walking Stick, W. O. Skoct (who is on a holiday tour) forfeited his game to E. Lewis. 'The final is to be played during this -week between E. Lewis and W. Ratcliff e.
