ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
STEAMER'S STEWARD COMMITS SUICIDE.
[Per Press Association.] WESTPORT, Nov. 19.. . At 10.30 a.m. to-day, the chief steward of the s.s. Whangape, Archibald McCallum, was found by his assistant. Joseph Cullen, in his bunk in an unconscious state, with a bottle of spirits of chloroform and laudanum on his table.' Medical aid was summoned, and artificial respiration resorted to andl emetics administered, but without avail. Deceased was a native of Glasgow, 45 years of ago. married, with a home in. Dunedin. He left a letter to the captain stating he had been a fooL to himself, and asking him to forward his effects to his wife at Dunedm. At the inquest this evening the evidence .went to show that the deceased had since- the arrival of the steamer in. Westport beem drinking, and . on one occasion lie had been admonished by, the captain. The verdict of the Coroner was that- death was due to an overdose of laudanum, self administered.
