ROWING.

GISBORNE CLUB

Races for the Cox cup and medals took place as follows last night: Williams and Dobson beat Traill and Rowe by several lengths; the winning crew were never pressed, and got home in a leisurely manner. Hansen and Stevenson beat Bayley and Doyle by two . lengths after a fairly hard race. Dods and Parnell beat Butler and Payne by about a length'; the winning crew were a considerable distance in the rear from the start, but in the straight caught uj>, and won after a hard struggle. Tins eveiiing, in connection witli this trophy, Dods rows P. Hamilton, Gully rows Somervell, G. Puflett meets Hansen, and Warren meets Williams. In the B grade fours for Mr. Morse’strophy, two races were got off. Morse, Clarkson, Riddell and Cogar beat Puflett,- Grieve, Perry and Miller. This was the closest race during the evening, and a hard fought struggle resulted. ' Puflett’s crew were considerably in the rear till near the end, when they made a grand spurt and lessened the distance ; considerably. The finish was vary close, Morse being declared the winner by about four feet. In the other race Adair, Tocker, Muir, and Spragg beat Buskncli, Bright, Winter, and Brown by a length and a half. The winners held the lead for a long distance, and deserved tlieir win. This evening for this trophy A. Coleman meets Morse, Gumming rows Rogers, Busby meets Adair, and Cowan rows Bennett. The adjourned Committee meeting of the Gisborne Rowing Club was held in the Gisborne Club last night, Mr C. .1. Hamilton in the chair. Mr P. Fromm was elected a member of the Club. It was resolyed’ that the present • grading of members remain in force for ■ the next series of races. J. Pollock was granted permission to replace Peacocke in Bennett’s crew. Messrs Hamilton, Williams and Swin_ ■•'nerton were appointed to select the crews in the “Buscke” and “Chilton” - fours, and it was decided to alter the - ■ -date of the races from 20th December - to 16th December, to allow members to ■'he free for the summer vacation. The list' of members was fully revised. Several deletions were made, : •' and 'the total membership now stands ’• at 131.■ POVERTY BAY CLUB. Racesjn. connection .with.the Poverty Bay Rowing Club took place last night for Mr. 8.. S. .Cox’s,trophies. In the • first, round Newton, O'Neill, Whitfield, and Christian.; beat McConnell, Bristow, Whitfield and.i Lang -by a couple of lengths. The winning crew had the , raoe to themselves, winning comfortably. Nicolas, Doig, Allen' and Sheets beat Ledger,'Dwyer, HefFord and Payne by a length and a half after a hard race- McConnell, Nicolas, Ingram, and Neill beat Douglas, Porter, Currie and ‘.Erne by over a length. The first round " will be comilieted, this, evening, when R. Jones meets A... Kirk,- C,. Winter meets H. J. . Holschier, and T. McConnell meets J.JWebh. . ROWING NOTES: (By “Double Scull.”) In spite- of inclement weather the popularity of rowing was demonstrated in...a most. convincing- manner. ..by the .attendance on the Haiti Bridge last evening. Some very interesting races took place amongst crews from the •two sheds, and the idea of changing ~- crews at the Band Rotunda seems an excellent! one,-there being no long, dreary wait between the different "heats. Amongst the Poverty Bay crews J. Newton beat A. McConnell rather easily'and Nicolas beat Ledger. McConnell beat Douglas after an excellent go. ‘ It is pleasing to. note that our remarks re uniform have borne fruit, but the ' 'style of rowing in some .cases "was- far. from perfect.' . It was particularly noticeable that..two of the races were won by crews with plenty .of swing and a good catch. - The Gisborne Club had two lots of (races for different grades, a'nd in the double sculling’ event' Williams beat Traill easily. Hansen beat. Bay*ly very easily and Dods beat Butler. V- This Club has not been in possession of this particular class of boat for many years,, and this is the first,.time they have used a sliding seat double scull, and it is remarkable that Williams, who was successful'-/in"a fixed:• boat of this 1 class' should , again have won the opening heat. Bo far as this class of. row- : ring is concerned the one (particular fault was hf decided tendency to row deep. Another noticeable fault was that the bow was often too slow with the catch.

In thef four-oar events C. Morse beat 1 H. Puflett after a real good race, and I J. Adair beat Bushnell rather easily. There.seems to be no comparison between the coxswains in the different sheds, the Poverty* Bay Club boys steer-ing-excellent courses, whilst ...the Gisborne shed 1 boys are most erratic in., their steering, though it may be noted= that the Gisborne boys are mostly new. to the game. -. ..." The Gisborne Club Committee have decided that no late entries will be received for future races.
