INTERESTING RACES
A great deal of interest was taken in the rowing last evening, no less than eleven races being got off by the two clubs. The bridge and the band rotunda, where the crews changed boats, were the two spots that drew the chief crowd, but a good many people spread along the bank at different points. POVERTY BAY CLUB. The first round for Mr. B. Cox’s trophies was concluded, when A. Kirk, J. West, J. Lloyd, and B. Carton, beat R. Jones, W. Dayman, L. Pavitt, and J. Walters, by over a length. C. Winter, J. Bragge, Collingwood, and B. McLeod, heat Holschier, W. Hall, Clark, and J. Parker. Winter had an easy win, leading by over a length from the bridge. T. McConnell, E. Roche, Scott, and L. Clarke, beat J. Webb, Pi Fischback, Whitehead, and 0. Hansen. This was a good race, the winner only getting home by half-a-lengtli. Some alteration was made in this crew. Owing to Anderson being ill Hansen was included and the crew altered. This evening the second round for Mr. B. S. Cox’s photos takes place, the following being the crews:—T. McConnell v. J. Newton, J. W. Nicolas v. J. McConnell, A. Kirk v. C. Clark, C. Winter a bye. The senii-finals will be rowed to-morro\v evening, and the final on Friday evening. Crews will also be picked for Robertson’s fours on Friday evening. GISBORNE CLUB. ' Races for the Cox cup and medals took place as follows :—Hamilton and Faram beat Bods and Parnell. Hamilton had a fairly easy win by about a length. Hansen and Stephenson beat G. -Puflett and Grenfell. Hansen won comfortably by over a length, although Puflett caught up a lot towards the end. Gully and Richards beat Somervell and Quigley by two lengths. Williams and Dobson beat Warren and McGonigal by half-a-length. Warren bad a/considerable lead at the, bridge, but in.the straight Williams came, ahead and won. " „ This evening Hamilton meets Williams, and G ally meets Hansen. In the B grade fours for Mr. Morse’s trophies, the races resulted as follows: A. Coleman, McConville, Fraser, and Dawson, beat Morse. Clarkson, Riddell, and Cogar by two lengths, an easy win. Cumming, Malone, G. Pollock and O’Meara, beat Rogers, Manning, Bousfield, and E. Morse by nearly three lengths. Adair, Tocker, Muir, and Spragg; beat Busby, Wheeler, Murray, and Hampton by half-a-length, after a very hard race. Cowan, Everiss, Hudson, and Wright, beat Bennett, Peacocke, Wythe, and Richmond. Cowan had an easy win, getting in by a length and a-half. This evening Coleman meets Cummin.g and Adair meets Cowan. The finals in both grades will be rowed on Thursday evening.
