LICENSES IX THE KIXG COUXTRV.-

At a representative session of the' District Synod of the Methodist Church to-day. the following resolution was passed: “That this Synod emphatically protests against the granting of wholesale licenses in the King Country, and considers it to be a distinct breach, of faith with the Maoris, and calls upon, the Government to pass such legislation as will prohibit the granting of any licenses in the King Country, and demands that promises made to the natives to protect them from the drink traffic must be held to succeed for all time. ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES. . WELLINGTON. Nov. 25. During-October last 2879 persons arrived in New Zealand, and 2175 departed. In October 190 S the arrivals numbered 3806 and' the departures 1904. CHRISTCHURCH CLERKS DO NOE ~ DESIRE A UNION. A meeting called by the Trades and Labor Council for the purpose of forming a clerk’s union proved abortive. Itwas attended by seventeen clerks, whonegatived a motion that it was desirable' to form a union. The clerks who spokestated that they were capable of looking after their own interests, and that the majority were well paid and satisfied.
