The House of Lords assented to the House of Commons’ compromise in the Irish Land Bill. . Lord Lansdowne said that the Government had, met the Lords in a 1 reasonable spirit, though the Opposition was still ... unsatisfied, particularly the amendment concerning appeal to-the tribunal dealing with ' compulsion and fixing compensation, which from the first had been put in the forefront. Nothing would be gained by-further controversy considering the political conditions of the moment.
THE PORTSMOUTH ELECTIONLIBERALS SHOW THE WHITE FEATHER.
Lord Charles Beresford, speaking at Portsmouth, accu.sod the Liberals of funk, because they were determined after all -not to issue a by-election writ. The “Chronicle” says that the Government will under no circumstances accept the Lords’ offer of co-operation with the object of, removing the difficulties due to a violent break in the constitutional usage. ; The “Pall Mall Gazette,” commenting on this, remarks that it- is not statesmanship, but ; merely vindictive stupidity.
