Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, on Saturday drove t c first’ pile of the Waiau bridge, in. the presence of a, large number of settleis of the districts interested, including representatives from M arlboroiigh and ■OhristchuMi. In a speech the Minister said that it was intended to' contimie the Waipara-Clieviot line to Jhe bridge. He was waited upon later at McKenzie (Cheviot) by a large and representative deputation, which urged unon him tne necessity of the South Island Mam Trunk line being completed, and tlie Minister undertook to place their ie- ' presentations before the Cabinet, 'in the evening.he was entertained at a banquet by the South Island Mam Trunk Railway League. . Tho lion. T. Mackenzie returned from Cheviot this morning, and was engaged during the day in .looking into local matters connected with the IJunaiTmeiits which are under him.
