GOVERNMENT ASKED TO TAKE
ACTION
iPnit Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. . A deputation from the Alakara Countv Council to-day asked the Alinister of Internal Affairs for legislation to relieve the people of the district from “the terrorism they have to endure from the furious driving of some motor cars and the fact of reckless riding cf many motor cyclists.” Air. Buddo promised to lay the matter before his colleagues, but made it plain that for himself he was entirely opposed to the Government taking ovc-r the control of the motor traffic. The local authorities had practically unlimited powers in the making and enforcing of by-laws to deal with the difficulty, for they would not bo disallowed bv the Government unless they contained something distinctly contrary to law. There was nothing afc. ad to prevent any County Couucli mating such by-laws, and dealing with tlio whole difficulty itself. To adopt the present proposal would mean taking from local bodies a very unpopular duty and laying it- upon the Government, and that he could not approve at all. There would also be very many difficulties in the way of administering a gen-« oral Act such as would be necessary. LICENSING OF AIOTOR CAR. DRIVERS URGED. / - CHRISTCHURCH,. Nov. 29. The City Council to-niglit decided -tef ask the Government to'issue regulations . for the licensing of motor car drivers.
