A question of some importance m connection with co-operative contracts . was. disposed! of .by a judgment- of the Arbitration Court to-day Tlie parents of Patrick Lawless sued tlie Public Works Department for compensation for his death. A co-operative gang had been assigned a piece of work on the Gatlins railway construction, and they arranged with one Scholes to provide a horse to draw trucks. He in turn employed tho deceased to drive tlie horse, and paid him 6s per day. On May stli Lawless was killed while at work, ihe question for the Court to determine was whether tlie co-operative' gang were contractors or piece-workers. I lie Court held-that they were contractors, which brougilt the case under section 13 of the> Workers’ Compensation Act, 190 S. The. Court awarded £IS6 compensation.
