SURTAX ON TOBACCO.
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER.
IJ’isit I'lticßS Association. | i - WELLINGTON, Nov. 30. ■ A deputation representing the tobacconists of New Zealand waited on the Rentier- to-day, to" protest against the imposition of a 2$ per»cent. surtax on tobacco. It was pointed out that the surtax must com© out of the pockets of the tobacconists, as they could not hand it on to 'She public, and the retailers would lose something like £14,000. The extra tax meant 11-20 d per lb on tobacco and 6d per 1.000 on cigarettes. It was stated that tobacconists would prefer taxation in the form of a license - , as a license would be some protection against Chinese and grocers, who'sold tobacco simply as a side. line. The Premier said that he would take the suggestion into consideration, and assured the deputation that the whole matter would receive fair consideration, and be dealt ; with probably 1 before Christmas.
